There are several factors to consider when buying and off-road vehicle such as an ATV or SxS (side by side). For example, will you be using the vehicle most often for trail riding with a partner or by yourself? Also, will you be using your vehicle primarily for farm use or recreational riding? Other issues, such as storage capacity or exposure to the elements may play an important role in what you purchase. Below are several pros and cons for the different types of off-road vehicles to contemplate when buying.
Maneuverability – If you intend to go through narrow spaces that are off the beaten path then ATV’s would have an advantage. Generally, ATV’s are narrower, rarely exceeding 50 inches in width and turn in a tighter range.
Cost – Here, the ATV has the advantage. The SxS is both a larger vehicle and has more features than the ATV. The SxS generally has larger engine and weighs more than ATV’s as well. This results in a significant price differential.
Component Size – The ATV, being a smaller vehicle, in most cases will not require being trailered when transported. Unlike the SxS, most ATV’s will fit directly onto a pickup.
Farm/Yard Use – Here, each has an advantage over the other. The ATV with attachments is more convenient for spreading seed, fertilizer or other materials. Its maneuverability can prove handy in tighter spaces also. However, for transporting lager objects and towing the SxS would prove the more advantageous vehicle.
Loading Capacity – The SxS, being a larger vehicle and with some having a dump body would have a distinct advantage over an ATV.
Seating Capacity – The SxS depending upon the style can seat two comfortably and up to five people. The SxS seats one person and possibly another with a one up seat.
Towing Capacity – SxS with the larger size engine and body can easily tow more than an ATV.
Comfort, Safety & Features – In these areas the SxS certainly out-shines the ATV. With comfortable seating, a windshield, doors and a roof you have far greater protection from the elements. Furthermore, the roll bar offers far greater protection in the event of a rollover. Also, the SxS allows for far more interior features with greater storage, heating and overhead lighting to name a few.
